I am frequently asked whether it is better to perform aerobic training (i.e. running) or resistance training (i.e. weight lifting). My answer is simply, “it is best to do both.”
Aerobic training typically burns more calories while performing the exercise, but resistance training continues to utilize calories as muscles grow. For every extra pound of muscle added to your body, it takes an additional 20 calories per day to sustain it. While this may not seem like a lot at first, consider adding just 5lbs of muscle, which would need an extra 100 calories per day for sustainment.
Weight training is very important for women, as it helps to maintain bone; which is very important in helping to prevent osteoporosis. Everytime I discuss osteoporosis, I always have to reiterate that women should be taking 1200mg of Calcium in divided doses and 800IU of vitamin D per day.
Aerobic training is excellent for improving your cardiovascular fitness. Tired of being out of breath after minimal exercise?
I personally believe total body fitness requires aerobic training combined with weight training. I do not subscribe to the idea that you can have total body fitness with only training in one category or the other. My training philosophy is simple, build muscle while improving cardiovascular fitness. This isn’t rocket science, it is simply applied logic. Consider becoming a FitTrek member to take advantage of my training programs which will train you in this fashion. That was a nicely timed plug wasn’t it?
